Selenium And Zinc For Skin Protection

According to the results of numerous clinical studies, selenium plays a key role in prevention of skin cancer. Selenium, whether taken as supplement or applied with sunscreen, protects skin from harmful UV radiation. It reduces the risk of redness and sun burns during prolonged exposure to sunlight.

To protect your skin in summer, experts recommend different selenium intake ranging from 50 to 100 micrograms daily. However, you should keep in mind that selenium taken in high doses is toxic and therefore, it is not recommended to take doses higher than prescribed.

Zinc is an integral part of many enzymes, and the highest concentration of zinc is found in areas where cell proliferation occurs, for example, areas of healing wounds. Zinc is considered to play an important role in repairing skin damages. Consuming zinc supplements is effective in treating burns, eczema, psoriasis and skin allergies.

Besides being efficient in repairing  damaged skin, zinc has beneficial effect on hair as well. Zinc speeds up hair growth and may reduce hair loss and repair split ends.
