Any sign of hope and success in finding the cure for this horrible disease is a good sign. Now, we are one step closer to discovering the cure thanks to a group of scientists in Europe, who may have found a breakthrough for breast cancer.
The breast cancer usually affects women. Namely, in one lifespan, one in eight women in the US will develop this horrible disease.
However, this clinical experiment may have found the right way to treat breast cancer once and for all. This study was presented at the European Breast Cancer Conference in Amsterdam by the professor Nigel Bundred. This is considered as a breast cancer breakthrough since it had amazing results that can help every breast cancer patient.
Namely, the scientists had tested the effectiveness of adrug combination, where they used Herceptin (or trastuzumab) and Lapatinib.
These two medications are not unknown to breast cancer patients since they have already been used in the treatment of this disease, but now they have been combined together for the first time.
Also, now for the first time, they have been used instead of surgery and chemotherapy. By doing this, they succeeded in getting rid of some types of breast cancer in just 11 days.
This study was funded by Cancer Research UK, and its main purpose was to use these medications to fight against the protein called HER2 (human epidermal growth factor receptor 2). HER2 is a protein which impacts the growth and multiplication of cancer cells.
Compared to other cancer types, this type of cancer is more likely to come back. This type of treatment is desirable among patients because of the fact that it gets rid of the need for chemotherapy and surgery.
This treatment does not have negative effect on the body and also does not have temporary side effects such as hair loss, fatigue and vomiting.
As you already know, chemotherapy is not completely effective and it is not the perfect choice for many cancer patients. They will have better chances of survival if they tried other options instead of chemotherapy.
This study was conducted on 275 women with HER2 positive breast cancer. One half of these women were put on the drug combination, and the other half was the control group.
The study results discovered that 11 percent of the participants who were using the drug combination had no cancer cells in their system only after two weeks, and 17 percent of them had drastically decreased the size of their tumors.
The control group, who was only taking Herceptin, had negative results since 0 percent of them had no trace of cancer cells.
A drop in tumor size was only noticed in 3 percent of the participants in the control group. These results show that the drug combination has a better effect on breast cancer cells than using the two drugs on their own.
However, one problem emerged to the surface. Herceptin’s licensing involves rules that this medication needs to be used alongside chemotherapy and should not be entered on its own.
However, this study is very beneficial because now we are one step closer to discovering the perfect combination for beating cancer, and maybe these results will contribute to change in those rules.
It is obvious that a lot more research needs to be done, but we should not lose hope because this is a major step for the fight against one of the deadliest diseases in the world.
The medicine advances every year, so there is possibility that the cure of cancer will be discovered sooner than we think.
