New York Times reporter Nick Bilton once asked Steve Jobs in an interview whether his children loved the iPad. Jobs responded that they haven’t used it yet because he and his wife limited the amount of technology their children use at home.
Sillicon Valley is a place where actually there is a trend of tech execs and engineers who protect their children from technology. Waldrof School, a non-tech school-where computers aren’t used , situated in Los Altos is one of the schools they send their children to.
Chris Anderson , CEO of 3D Robotics and a father of five explains what is the reason for people who work in tech to keep their children away from using it.
He says that his children accuse him and his wife for being fascists and overly concerned about tech and that none of their friends follow the same rules. He continues by saying that he doesn’t want to see the dangers of technology affect his children.
Nowadays children tend to use technology at a very early age, thus their lives become devoid of creativity and imagination. Just because we didn’t have smart phones and laptops doesn’t mean that we had any less quality childhood. In contrary, we had a much more fulfilled childhood.
We were playing outside, learned from movement, hands-on interaction, and we learned by reading books and socializing with our friends. This has helped us to become more well-rounded individuals.
Be aware that handing your children a smart phone would rob them of a healthier and more independent development . Instead of playing Candy Crush all day or Snapchat with their friends, why don’t you as a parent consider another way of organizing their free time?
Go outside and play with them, surround them with nature. At first they may be resentful but in the end they’ll be thankful I assure you.
